Getting there

I have had a crazy day ending with me being filmed for a possible TV programme (more about that if it comes off).

The room is by no means finished but we are finished for now and can at least sit down and enjoy it. It seems a bit sparse and minimalist but feels very cosy. The red sofas will be at the end of the room with the Christmas tree in, once Christmas is over. We will then put an L-shaped sofa in their place. A window seat is to be built in the bay window where the tree currently sits.

We are waiting for wall lights to be delivered from Jim Lawrence and have some great vintage posters being framed for the walls.

In the meantime we are loving having our sitting room back and the dynamics of the room has changed so much.

Some things have worked really well. I particularly like these vintage glass doorknobs, that I have had for years, perfect for our doors.

I rushed out on Friday to get a tree to make the room Christmassy for the children and drove around for hours with no success. I eventually found one at Cornish Farmers but when I got there I found that they didn't net them. I had bought an 8 foot tree!! Somehow I managed to stuff it into my car and then when I got home, to an empty house, I dragged it out of the car, into the house and put it up. Amazing what you can achieve when you are determined. The looks on my children's faces made it all worthwhile.

We have very few decorations up this year, understandably, and I am not sure how many more will get put up between now and the big day, but I love what we have.

Look at this beautiful doll, called Holly, made for me by the talented Jan.

Nearly finished my Christmas shopping but I have hardly sent out any cards this year. With the chaos that has been such a big part of my life these last few weeks, something had to give! If I haven't sent you a card, I am sorry but I do really wish you a very HAPPY CHRISTMAS. Pin It

Ruskin

When I saw this little embroidered picture in an antiques centre I couldn't resist it. Anyone who knows me knows that this is my way of dealing with things anyway!

I will be listing a few quilts and crocheted blankets on my website this week. Just thought I would give you all a sneak preview. They are so sweet I would like to keep them all!

I have a huge amount of eiderdowns to sell too but I need to launder them first. This I will do when it stops raining. Will it EVER stop raining?!

The Fabric Room

The Fabric Room
Originally uploaded by thefabricofmylife.
On Sunday night I was very sick. I haven't been that ill in years. Monday I spent most of the day in bed, sleeping, recovering. I NEVER go to bed. I HATE going to bed because I always think I am missing something, but this time I had no choice. I was proper poorly!

On Tuesday I hobbled out of bed to clean up my fabric room as I needed to take some high-res photos for publicity. It was no mean feat believe me. This room was filled with bags and bags of fabrics that I had bought and just popped into the room thinking that one day I would put them away. The problem with that was there was simply nowhere else to store them. All drawers, shelves and cupboards were full to bursting. So after lots of effort I removed all the bags to be stored elsewhere so that now I have an organised, useable and (I think) beautiful room to work in. My Sylko dispenser is now right at home on the counter. So here, for your eyes only, is the fruits of my labour. Come on into my shop, pull up a chair, let me get you a tea and enjoy rummaging around the shelves. (click on the photos for close-ups) Pin It

Corners of my home

I always love looking around other peoples houses. The blogs I visit with photos showing corners of their homes are so fascinating so I thought I would start to feature corners of my home from time-to-time. Niki recently posted pictures of her enamelware collection. I too love enamelware (much to Paul's disgust as he hates it!) and have collected as much as I am allowed to get away with! It is quite evident in my kitchen and is used a lot. I have tins which are in constant use, jugs which are used as jugs or vases, my bain maries are the only ones I have. My colander (hung up by the aga) is used daily but the teapots are never used I have to admit. They are purely decorative as is the tin labelled 'tea' in the glass cabinet whose lid is rusted on but I forgive it because it is so beautiful and therefore qualifies as far as Mr Morris is concerned when he said “Have nothing in your house that you do not know to be useful, or believe to be beautiful”.

So here, some of my enamelware in my kitchen.
